Expand Your Skills for Use in Personal, Professional,
and Educational Arenas

Social Media is an increasing part of our daily lives. From connecting with friends and loved ones, to the ways that business works, to social and political change, it is a force that is here to stay.

Consider, for example, just some of the statistics illustrated in this excellent, short (4 minute) video from Eric Qualman:

Social Media can no longer be ignored, and many of us are already using it daily, sometimes enthusiastically, sometimes reluctantly. But we think that you can use it better, safer, more thoughtfully, and more strategically to achieve positive things!

This is why we developed a new course aimed at improving your understanding and skills with social media!

CCM 367E Intermediate Social Media

What is this course?
This is a new course that offers practical, experiential learning about social media. Students will get to explore the topic, gain real world experience, and come away with practical knowledge of how to use social media for personal, professional, and/or educational goals.
We will explore subjects that are both practical and sometimes haunting, ranging from the basics of how different sites work, to the social implications. Significant topics include identity, etiquette, privacy, digital censorship. Marylhurst has never offered a class quite like this before.

Who is this for?
If you are slightly familiar with social media, and want to understand and use it better, this course is specifically for you! Students of any discipline are welcome. It is especially useful to those looking to run a business, work in PR or marketing, or promote themselves and their work.

Why should students take it?
  • To avoid "Social Media Angst" and stop feeling "left behind"
  • To gain practical digital communication skills
  • To enhance their career and find more rewarding jobs
  • To understand how social media is changing the world
